WSL –
160 YEARS OF SERVING THE PEOPLE OF WASHINGTON
Did
you know that the Washington State Library is 160 years old this year? The
Organic Act of March 2, 1853 provided $5,000 for the purchase of library
materials. On May 21, 1953 the first shipment of books, selected by the
Territorial Governor of Washington, Isaac I. Stevens, left New York City on the
clipper ship, Invincible. Arriving in San Francisco on September 9, 1853, the
Invincible’s cargo of books was transferred to the brig Tarquinia, which left
San Francisco on October 5, 1853. At long last, on October 23, 1853, the first
shipment of books for the Territorial Library arrived in Olympia.
To
mark this important occasion, the Washington State Library is celebrating the
160th anniversary of the founding of the Washington Territorial
Library with an open house. The celebration theme is “Washington State Library:
160 Years of Serving the People of Washington.” Come and join the festivities!
