Assignment #5
Databases
Read: Badke, Chapt. 6, “Library Catalogs and Journal Databases”
1. Information can be viewed as a public good. There can even be a right to
some kinds of information in Washington State and the United States..
2. Information can be viewed as a private good. Access to some kinds of information may be restricted.
Some kinds of information are commodities that are bought and sold in the marketplace.
3. Libraries, themselves a public good, provide access to both kinds of
information.
4. Libraries provide access to databases, which are often expensive.

1. ProQuest
2. Academic Search
3. Opposing Viewpoints
4. 19th Century Readers’ Guide (hard copy only)
5. Check out the list of databases at the South Seattle College Library or your library.

ProQuest Research:

Try 3 searches around your topic: Basic, Advanced, and Topic. You might “stash”
your results temporarily. Report you results including availability.

Now try searching 3 other databases for your topic (they don’t have to be from the above list).
